SCRIPTURE: “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Mat. 1:21 NIV)
OBSERVATION: “Save” is the word “sozo” in the Greek text. It means “to save, to make whole, to make completely well.” The messenger from heaven announces to Joseph that Mary’s child is to be named “Jesus” because he will “sozo” his people from their sins. Jesus is actually “Yeshua,” a name that means “Yahweh saves.” So, it is through this baby Yeshua that Yahweh does the saving.
APPLICATION: I feel like sometimes we have tried to save ourselves from our sins. This is impossible! Sin is the power of the adversary and this power is too great for any self-deliverance. Just like when God’s people were held captive by Pharaoh in Egypt, if there’s any saving to be done, it’s going to have to be supernatural. And so it is through Yeshua, the Lamb of God, that we can be forgiven of our sins and be granted the victory over sin’s power and effects on our lives. Through the Spirit Yeshua gives us, the power of sin is broken. We can now live for God.
PRAYER: Thank you Father for salvation! Thank you for Yeshua! And thank you for giving me the Holy Spirit within to help me live for you. Thank you that this is all “because of the tender mercy of our God” (Lk. 2:78). Because of your tender mercy, I am free!
